Further to our bulletin on Friday, informing you that the Defense Fund deduction was not discontinued as scheduled on the Feb 22nd payday, we will not be able to refund, through payroll, the dues deducted for this period. We have reviewed the options for refunding dues submitted and have been unable to find any cost effective way to do so. It would have to be a totally manual process and would cost the local in excess of $2500.00 to refund approximately $2800.00. There are also income tax implications if the reimbursement isn’t done through payroll. The deduction on the Feb 22nd payroll is tax deductible and you will be credited on the 2008 T4. If the local reimbursed the total amount to you, then Canada Revenue Agency could have an issue. Therefore, the local commits that when the Defense Fund Assessment is again implemented by the National Union, we will not apply the assessment until the second pay period. If you have any questions, please contact an executive officer. Contact information is available on the website under the Executive page. In solidarity,
